LOS ANGELES (October 3, 2006) - Clint Dempsey today won the 2006 Honda Player of the Year Award, which for the last 16 years has honored the best player on the U.S. National Soccer Team as chosen by the American sports media.

Dempsey was presented the key to a new Honda Ridgeline truck during the annual Honda Player of the Year Award luncheon, which was held at The Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.

Dempsey received a total of 237 points in voting by 207 sports journalists who participated in this year's balloting. Kasey Keller finished second with a total of 184 points, and Brian McBride finished third with 127 points. A player received three points for each first-place vote, two points for each second-place vote, and one point for each third-place vote. In order to be eligible for the Honda Player of the Year Award, a player must play in a minimum of three (3) games for the U.S. National Team during the calendar year.

Dempsey scored four goals in nine games with the U.S. National Team in 2006, including one of the U.S. goals in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and this year finished in a tie for the team lead in goals scored. Since his debut with the National Team at the end of 2004, he has played in a total of 23 games and scored six goals for the United States. The 23 year old midfielder is in his third season with the New England Revolution.
