LOS ANGELES (August 17, 2006) – Clint Dempsey, Kasey Keller and Brian McBride have been selected by 207 sports journalists from across the nation as the three finalists for the 2006 Honda Player of the Year Award, widely recognized as the most prestigious award a U.S. National Team player can receive.

The winner will be announced during the award luncheon celebrating the Honda Player of the Year Award, which will take place on Tuesday, October 3 at The Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The award luncheon is open to all media and will begin at 11:30am. The winner of the Honda Player of the Year Award will receive a new Honda Ridgeline.

Clint Dempsey, a first-time finalist for the Honda Player of the Year Award, scored one of the U.S. goals in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In all, the 23-year-old midfielder tallied four goals for the U.S. National Team in 2006, which placed him in a tie for the team lead. He has played a total of 23 games with the National Team, all coming in the last two years, and has scored a total of six goals. Dempsey plays for the New England Revolution and won the MLS Rookie of the Year honor in 2004.

Kasey Keller, the winner of the 2005 Honda Player of the Year Award, is a finalist for a record sixth time this year. During the World Cup, the 36-year-old goalkeeper was named the “Man of the Match” in the United States’ draw against eventual World Cup champion Italy. In his 96 appearances with the United States, Keller is the National Team’s all-time leader in wins, World Cup appearances and shutouts. Keller is the captain of Borussia Moenchengladbach in Germany and has spent time with clubs in England and Spain.

Brian McBride, a veteran of three World Cups, ranks second on the U.S. National Team’s all-time scoring list, trailing only two-time Honda Player of the Year award winner Eric Wynalda. McBride is also the U.S. National Team’s all-time leader in World Cup qualifying goals scored, and is the only American to score goals in two different World Cups. Currently the 34-year-old forward plays for Fulham in the English Premiership where this past season he was named Player of the Season for 2005-2006 by Fulham’s supporters.

Over the last 15 years, 11 different players have won the Honda Player of the Year Award: Kasey Keller (2005, 1999), Landon Donovan (2004, 2003 and 2002), Earnie Stewart (2001), Claudio Reyna (2000), Cobi Jones (1998), Eddie Pope (1997), Eric Wynalda (1996, 1992), Alexi Lalas (1995), Marcelo Balboa (1994), Thomas Dooley (1993) and Hugo Perez (1991).
