LANDON DONOVAN BECOMES THE FIRST BACK-TO-BACK WINNER OF THE HONDA PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARDLast Year's Winner Again Named the Best Player on the U.S. National Team by the Media and Will Receive Another Honda Accord; Donovan Joins Honda Player of the Decade Eric Wynalda as the Only Two-Time Honda Player of the Year Winners in the 13-Year History of the Award. LOS ANGELES (October 7, 2003) - Landon Donovan was today named the first back-to-back winner of the Honda Player of the Year Award, given annually to the best player on the U.S. National Team as chosen by the media, during a gala luncheon at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Donovan, who last year became the youngest Honda Player of the Year award winner ever, joins 1992 and 1996 Honda Player of the Year Eric Wynalda as the only players who have ever won the award more than once. A total of 206 journalists from all over the country selected Donovan as the best player on the U.S. National Team in 2003. Donovan received the keys to another new Honda Accord EX V-6 Sedan at today's ceremony, and also had his name added to the coveted Honda Player of the Year trophy for the second time. Additionally, American Honda Motor Company, Inc. will again donate $5,000 dollars to the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) on Donovan's behalf. All three finalists for the Honda Player of the Year Award traveled to Los Angeles in order to participate in today's award ceremony with their families. In all, Donovan received a total of 396 points by the 206 journalists who participated in the voting, which ended on Friday, August 1. Veteran forward Brian McBride, a first-time finalist for the award, finished second with a total of 194 points. Defender Carlos Bocanegra, also a first-time finalist, received a total of 130 points and finished third. A player receives three points for each first-place vote, two points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote. This year Donovan led the U.S. National Team in scoring with a total of seven goals. In a July CONCACAF Gold Cup match against Cuba, he became only the fourth U.S. player ever to score four goals in one game, and finished in a tie as the Gold Cup's leading scorer. At the age of 21, he is already tied for sixth place on the U.S. National Team's all-time scoring list with 14 career goals. The MVP of the 1999 U-17 FIFA World Championship, Donovan originally signed with German club Bayer Leverkusen and is currently in his third season with the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer.
