DONOVAN MAKES HISTORY AS THE FIRST THREE-TIME HONDA PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNERDonovan Selected the Best Player on the U.S. National Team For Third Straight Year LOS ANGELES (November 18, 2004) - U.S. National Team midfielder/ forward Landon Donovan today made history when he was revealed as the first three-time winner of the Honda Player of the Year Award, which is presented annually to the best player on the U.S. National Soccer Team as chosen by the media. Only 22, Donovan, who last year became the first player to win the Honda Player of the Year Award in consecutive years, and who in 2002 became the youngest Honda Player of the Year Award winner ever, was again selected the recipient of the most prestigious honor an American soccer player can receive, by 204 sports journalists from all over the country who participated in the voting. With 355 points, Donovan finished ahead of runners-up DaMarcus Beasley (age 22), with 272 points, and Carlos Bocanegra (age 25), with 131 points. A player received three points for each first-place vote, two points for each second-place vote, and one point for each third-place vote. In order to be eligible for the Honda Player of the Year Award, a player must play in a minimum of three (3) games for the U.S. National Team during the calendar year. As a special recognition for winning the Honda Player of the Year Award three times, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. presented Donovan with a new Honda automobile of his choice, which will complement the Honda Accord sedan and coupe automobiles he previously won in 2002 and 2003. Donovan, who traveled from Columbus, Ohio, to Los Angeles after the National Team's match against Jamaica in order to attend today's ceremony, was overwhelmed with emotion about this unprecedented feat in the history of the award. "I still cannot believe that I won the Honda Player of the Year Award for a third time. I am humbled and honored by this recognition once again, and want to thank everyone who gave me this honor and allowed me to make history by becoming the first three time winner," said Donovan after learning he had won the Honda Player of the Year Award for the third consecutive year. Beasley and Bocanegra, who both play for clubs in Europe, and who were unable to travel to the U.S. due to their club commitments, both took part in the ceremony live via satellite from the Netherlands and England, respectively. In 2004, Donovan finished tied as the leading scorer on the U.S. National Team in 2004 with 5 goals, including two in a World Cup qualifying match against Panama, and he also was the captain of the U.S. National Team during its last three World Cup qualifying matches against El Salvador, Panama and Jamaica. The previous winners of the Honda Player of the Year Award are: Landon Donovan (2003 and 2002), Earnie Stewart (2001), Claudio Reyna (2000), Kasey Keller (1999), Cobi Jones (1998), Eddie Pope (1997), Eric Wynalda (1996 and 1992), Alexi Lalas (1995), Marcelo Balboa (1994), Thomas Dooley (1993) and Hugo Perez (1991). In 2000, Eric Wynalda was named the Honda Player of the Decade.
