KASEY KELLER WINS THE HONDA PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR THE SECOND TIME IN HIS CAREER

Goalkeeper Selected the Best Player on the U.S. National Team in 2005

LOS ANGELES (November 30, 2005) – Kasey Keller today won the 2005 Honda Player of the Year Award, which for the last 15 years has been presented annually to the best player on the U.S. National Soccer Team as chosen by the American sports media.

Keller, who traveled especially from Germany to Los Angeles to be present at today’s award ceremony, also won the Honda Player of the Year Award in 1999, and thereby joins Eric Wynalda (1996 and 1992) and Landon Donovan (2004, 2003, 2002) as the only three players who have won the most prestigious award in American soccer more than once.

As the winner of the 2005 Honda Player of the Year Award, Keller received, during today’s ceremony, the key to a new Honda Ridgeline truck.

Keller received a total of 344 points in voting by the 206 sports journalists who participated in this year’s balloting, and finished just ahead of runner-up Landon Donovan, who received 329 points. Midfielder DaMarcus Beasley finished third with a total of 270 points. A player received three points for each first-place vote, two points for each second-place vote, and one point for each third-place vote. In order to be eligible for the Honda Player of the Year Award, a player must play in a minimum of three (3) games for the U.S. National Team during the calendar year.

Keller had an outstanding year for the National Team in 2005, in which he played in a career-high 14 games and set U.S. goalkeeping records for wins (nine) and shutouts (eight), five of which were against each of the other teams that participated in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. Keller, who finished the year with a 0.56 goals against average, now has a total of 44 shutouts in his 89 appearances with the National Team, which includes 19 shutouts in World Cup qualifying matches. Currently Keller plays for Borussia Moenchengladbach of Germany’s Bundesliga.

Among those in attendance at today’s Honda Player of the Year Award luncheon in Los Angeles were Dr. S. Robert Contiguglia, the President of U.S. Soccer, and Bruce Arena, the Manager of the U.S. National Team.

Created by Fútbol de Primera and sponsored by American Honda Motor Co., Inc., the Honda Player of the Year Award this year celebrated its 15th Anniversary. The previous winners are: Landon Donovan (2004, 2003, 2002), Earnie Stewart (2001), Claudio Reyna (2000), Kasey Keller (1999), Cobi Jones (1998), Eddie Pope (1997), Eric Wynalda (1996 and 1992), Alexi Lalas (1995), Marcelo Balboa (1994), Thomas Dooley (1993) and Hugo Perez (1991).
