SUNIL GULATI ALSO TO APPEAR DEC. 11 IN L.A.
New Hero of Mexican Soccer To Discuss Qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup;
Retiring U.S. Legend Paul Caligiuri Also To Be Honored During Honda Symposium
LOS ANGELES (November 19, 2001) - Two of the most influential people in North American soccer, Javier Aguirre, the Head Coach of Mexico's National Team, and Sunil Gulati, the Executive Vice President of U.S. Soccer, will speak at the 4th Honda Symposium on December 11, 2001 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
Javier Aguirre is the most respected coach in Mexico today. When he took charge of the National Team in June, he faced a nearly impossible task of needing to win practically every remaining game in order to have a chance at World Cup qualification. Under Aguirre's leadership during their last five World Cup qualifying matches, the Mexican National Team won four and tied one, and as a result qualified for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Aguirre will speak on "Rebuilding Mexico's National Team Program."
"When I was hired, I faced the difficult task of winning games and assuring Mexico's qualification for the World Cup," said Aguirre. "It was not an easy road and now I will have a little bit more time to build a better team for the World Cup. I look forward to sharing my experiences during my tenure thus far as Mexico's National Team coach next month at the Honda Symposium."
Sunil Gulati is one of the most knowledgeable and experienced people in U.S. soccer. Previously Executive Vice President of World Cup USA 1994 and Deputy Commissioner of Major League Soccer, Gulati has selected the topic "U.S. Soccer in the New Millennium."
Fútbol de Primera will also honor Paul Caligiuri in a special ceremony during the Honda Symposium. As a player with the national team for 14 years, a veteran of two World Cups and a role model to youth and professional players alike, Paul forever changed soccer in the United States. Best known for scoring the goal which qualified the U.S. for the 1990 World Cup, its first in 40 years, Caligiuri ended his playing career earlier this year and Fútbol de Primera will honor his numerous achievements on December 11.
Created in 1998 by Fútbol de Primera, the Honda Symposium features soccer's foremost executives, coaches and players leading an open forum on the major issues in soccer. Past participants include FIFA Senior Vice President Julio Grondona, FIFA executives Keith Cooper and Dr. Michel D'Hooghe, former U.S. Soccer President Alan Rothenberg, Argentina National Team Coach Marcelo Bielsa, and World Cup coaches Bora Milutinovic and Steve Sampson.
The Honda Symposium kicks off two days of soccer festivities in Los Angeles that will culminate on Wednesday, December 12 with a ceremony announcing the winner of the 2001 Honda Player of the Year award. This honor is presented annually to the best player on the U.S. National Team as chosen by the media.
Fútbol de Primera will exclusively broadcast the 2002 FIFA World Cup on its nationwide radio network of 100 stations. For updates on the Honda Symposium or to access previous press releases, please visit Fútbol de Primera on the internet at www.LaRadioDelMundial.com.
